This book has both vivid descriptions and a complicated plot. I'm not entirely sure how it all fit into such a short book. Those who have read books by VanderMeer before will be able to tell that this is his first novel, it isn't as good as his other books. It starts off using made-up slang, but the POV changes 20-30 pages in and the slang goes away, so don't give up if it doesn't make sense at first. The slang is easier to understand than Clockwork Orange. There are a lot of concepts here that work better in VanderMeer's other books. VanderMeer is a really good author, so even though this isn't his best, it's still quite a bit better than average. City Of Saints And Madmen is the best Jeff VanderMeer book to start with.
