This is a very well-crafted book. I enjoyed the way that MacColl interwove the past and present in plot lines following Iris and Grace. I found the plot and characters to be very engaging. I will read other work by this author.

Touted as International Best Seller which is one reason I bought it.
Didn't get "into" the story 'til well past mid point though I'm medical person myself, just didn't grip me 'til the end, and still wondering about parts mentioned earlier that don't seem to've been answered at all.

-interesting look at women in medicine - set in France during WWI and Australia in 1970's -intriguing and realistic characters and the choices they make -told from different points of view

This sweeping novel follows the lives of the so-called "flower bird girls": Iris Crane and Violet Heron, through friendship and tragedy. Picture Clara Barton as a young Australian nurse during WWI.
