On a Long Island beach at dusk, Bob Mitchell and Janet Whitney conduct their illicit love affair in front of a video camera, set to record each steamy moment. Suddenly a terrible explosion lights up the sky. Grabbing the camera, the couple flees as approaching police cars speed toward the scene. Five years later, the crash of Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical mal-function. But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800-the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Baker & Taylor
A fictionalized account of the investigation and theories surrounding the crash of TWA Flight 800 over Long Island in 1996.

Blackwell North Amer
At dusk on July 17, 1996, on a deserted Long Island beach, a man and a woman engage in adulterous sex in front of a video camera. Suddenly a terrible blast lights up the dark summer sky. TWA Flight 800 has just exploded in midair with 230 souls on board, and the video camera has recorded the last moments of the doomed airliner.
Five years later, the government has declared the crash a result of mechanical failure. But John Corey, an ex-NYPD detective who is now a contract agent with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is persuaded by Kate Mayfield, his wife and task force partner, that the case deserves a second look.
Kate, a career FBI agent, plays by the rules. Corey plays by no rules but his own. Against long odds and warnings from their superiors, they set out to reopen the case and discover its most crucial piece of evidence. The hunt will lead to a conspiracy at the highest levels and a race toward an elusive and lethal truth that could be even more horrifying than the crash of Flight 800, one with unimaginable consequences for America - and the world.

Super easy to read and a surprise ending....loved it!

It is not possible to get enough of Nelson deMille. Want summer beach reading? Here it is. Want 2:00 am I can't get to sleep reading --- then don't read this: it'll keep you awake in further. For my money, deMille is at his writingest best when he's writing his John Corey novels. By turns cynical, sarcastic, self-deprecating and just plain amusing lead character Corey, out-mustered NYPD cop and part time FBI operative is tenacious like a terrier: he can't. won't let go of a case even when threatened by his bosses with a sojourn in Yemen (obviously not a nice place).
Night Fall's ending is a deus ex machina kind of thing: a bit of a cheat. But 'nuff said 'cause the rest of the book is deMille superb.
Take it to the beach but don't get it all suntan lotion sandy. OK?

I read the whole book waiting for the 'motive'. Why are people worried for their lives, why is the CIA and FBI chasing them, who can you trust???

The book was well written and suspenseful. As I said, I read the whole book waiting to find out the reason for all the suspense, he never gave a reason for the suspense. He just made it suspenseful.. Go figure.

John Corey is his usual obnoxious self following no rules but his own.
Much of the novel takes a long time getting to the finale which was totally unexpected and, for me, an unsatisfactory ending but certainly a very surprising one. This was not my favorite DeMille novel. Much better is Plum Island and The Lion's Game.

My first book by Nelson DeMille. Pretty good read but after reading his other novels I don't think this is as good.

Not as good as his other books. I would say mediocre.

I rate this an 8 out of 10. DeMille is one of the best. Recommend.

John Corey is back after his confrontation with Asad Khalil from The Lion's Game. How that episode ended still sticks in Corey's craw, and I'm hoping he gets another shot at Khalil in a future book. In Night Fall, DeMille inserts one of the theories as to why TWA Flight 800 fell from the sky in a fireball in July, 1996. Corey looks into the crash based on evidence never made public during the initial investigation. To me, the story itself takes a back seat to John Corey's personality and humor, his relationship with others and his reaction to events. By the way, Corey's involvement takes place 5 years after the actual events, culminating in the fall? ('nuff said).
