Chronicles the experiences of a young man in 19th century England.
Disc 1. Part 1: The death of their father forces Nicholas and Kate Nickleby to seek help from their uncle. The cold-hearted Ralph sends Nicholas to teach at an institution for boys run by a brutal headmaster, Wackford Squeers.-- Part 2: Ralph arranges squalid accommodations for Kate and finds her a job at a millinery. Meanwhile, Nicholas defends his friend Smike from Wackford Squeers' cruelty, and the two must flee his brutality.-- Part 3: Ralph threatens to withdraw financial support unless Kate and Mrs. Nickleby renounce Nicholas, while Nicholas and Smike join a traveling theatrical company run by Vincent Crummles.
Disc 2. Part 4: Nicholas wins acclaim for his star performance and attracts the eye of the leading lady. Kate finds herself the unwitting romantic prize of unsavory business men at a party thrown by Ralph, who refuses to come to her defense.-- Part 5: While Nicholas is enjoying his newfound celebrity, Kate's situation is increasingly dire. She loses her job and is badgered by crass advances. Hearing of her predicament, Nicholas abruptly heads to London.
Disc 3. Part 6: Disgusted by Ralph's uncaring attitude, Nicholas renounces his uncle, leaving the family without support. But luck--and love-- are with him: Nicholas secures a position and meets the beautiful Madeleine Bray.-- Part 7: With his own fortunes secured, Nicholas turns his attention to Smike, who is a target of Wackford Squeers' pettiness and Ralph Nickleby's vengence. Nicholas' efforts save his friend from a life of misery.
Disc 4. Part 8: Ralph Nickleby tries to cheat Madeleine Bray out of her inheritance. He is denied his dark goal, but Nicholas' joy over thwarting his uncle's scheme is dimmed when he learns that Smike is gravely ill.-- Part 9: Overwhelmed, Ralph Nickleby resorts to a final act of extreme desperation. For Nicholas and Kate, it is the start of happier times. Their circumstances--family, health, hearth, and contentment--resolve in classic Dickens fashion.

Excellent to do this in this fantastic play format by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Absolutely fun, the characters are portrayed so dramatically and the sorrowful parts of Dickens are tear-jerking, yet followed up immediately by such gaeity and liveliness. Love that there is some audience participation and inclusion also! Every actor/actress is spot-on!
