At the height of the Cold War, two Americans are runnng a bar in the West German capital, called Mac's place. One of the pair, Michael Padillo, isn't around a lot; he keeps disappearing on "business trips." McCorkle, his partner, wisely doesn't ask questions; he knows Padillo has a second job -- he's a (reluctant) US agent. But McCorkle is ready to answer a call for help from Padillo, and he joins his friend in a blind journey with no inkling of what they will encounter at the turn of each dark and dangerous corner.

This spy novel helped to explain the turbulent times in the two Germanys postwar well before the Berlin Wall came down. In a conversation between the two main characters, they agreed that the Wall would not come down in their lifetimes. I was in W. Germany in 1970 as a young man and was not aware of all the turbulence just below the surface of polite and well ordered German society.

This is his first novel and I did not like it nearly as well as the later ones I've read (The Bramble Bush and Chinaman's Chance, I think it is called?). Maybe it is just that this is sort of a classic cold war spy story set in divided Germany and that's not my favorie milieu. His writing style seems slightly less crisp, too. But he is very good a character.
