On returning home in a drunken state after discovering her boyfriend has been married for twelve years, Maureen O'Donnell finds the body of her boyfriend tied to her kitchen chair with his throat cut, and becomes the prime suspect in his murder

Blackwell North Amer
You don't go to Garnethill for the amenities. You only go to this grimmest of Glasgow's hilltop neighborhoods if it happens to be your address. At that, it helps if you're blitzed. Especially if you've spent a long day at a dead-end job and just learned that your live-in boyfriend, a therapist short on scruples, has been married for twelve years. Fuzzy-headed - the wine was red and cheap - you tumble into bed. Count yourself lucky, if you don't wake up to discover your arse of a lover in the middle of the living room, tied to one of your blue kitchen chairs with his throat slit clean through to the vertebrae. Maureen O'Donnell isn't lucky.
Emotionally battered but no victim, the survivor of a nightmarish childhood and, just months ago, a mental breakdown, Maureen now finds herself the prime suspect in a grisly murder case.

& Taylor

When Maureen O'Donnell finds Douglas, a shady therapist with whom she is having an affair, in her apartment with his throat slit, she sets out to retrace his last few days and uncovers a horrifying scandal at a local psychiatric hospital. A first novel.

Good story that keeps the reader's attention. Wonderful sense of Glasgow's atmosphere.
Nice pick for a protagonist. Not your typical messed-up young woman.

Before Lisbeth Salander there was Maureen O'Donnell, a heavy smoking, hard drinking, former mental patient and incest survivor. One morning she finds her lover murdered in her apartment. The police are on the case but following the wrong leads. With some help from a friend and her brother Maureen decides it's up to her to find and stop the murderer. A hard hitting, gritty story with great characters. First of a trilogy.
