This was the first book I have ever read by Patricia Cornwell because a friend loaned it to me. I certainly need to preface my thoughts about the book by saying I read a lot of mysteries, but don't often read gory or obscenely gruesome ones. This one was a bit too graphic for my taste, and although I had to lay it aside for a break now and then, I still felt compelled to finish it.

First, the pros; I thought the story line was very interesting and I liked that several random chapters were devoted to the voice of the killer, giving a change of pace to the story. It was obvious a lot of research went into the psychological aspect of the characters and their motivations.

The cons: The story dealt with a psychopathic killer and overall seemed quite intense and dark. I got confused several times in the story. The descriptions of the torture and mutilated bodies were far too graphic. There wasn't one character that I felt I identified with or felt a connection to. All the characters thought fairly highly of themselves. No one seemed to get along or respect each other. Even the relationship between Benton and Scarpetta seemed flat.

I would have to think twice about reading another Cornwell book.
