The film is based on a true story of the 9th company during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Young Soviet Army recruits are sent from boot camp directly into the war in Afghanistan. Real war is not like boot camp at all. This inexperienced company is sent to defend a difficult position, a task which may be beyond their capabilities.

This movies is all about men relating to other men! It is not a fun or entertaining movie and it is not informative because everyone knows war is horrible, yet we humans keep on killing each other. The best thing about the movie that this director and film maker captures is how men related to each other; I hate to say it, but there was a kind of beauty in their rough friendships. Perhaps as a woman I never appreciated this comradship!

After watching this movie and considering many other interviews/opions/news/own experience about war etc, I have the following opinions:

1) This is a real war movie

2) No one can win a war in a place when and where they are conceived as the invaders.

3) To reduce the damage/loss from this unended war we need to rely more on the psychological & propaganda techniques. Some personal freedom should be sacrificed and that is being done (such as monitoring money flowing, taping the suspected phone calls to Yemen, etc, checking boarding airplanes, checking suspected tourists, etc.)

4) President Obama envisions the capture of bin Ladin in Afghanistan will end the war, and only the naive faithful will buy that. Maybe he says so to get the anti-Bush votes but many scholars in Afghanistan issues don't agree with him. This war is a very complex conflict between the West and the extremist Islamic cultures (economy, religion, ways of life, etc). The intensity and complexity of this conflict can be compared to one between Israel and Arabs, one between the pro-life and the pro-choice; they never end. The Obama accuses the Bush of spreading the unnecessary fear about the terrorism! Yet, in one extreme, the Bush spreads fear; the other extreme, the Obama ignores the reality of terrorism; both are doing so for their political gains at the expense of the people' rights and safety.
However, to realize the threat of terrorism is much better/safer than to ignore it. Don't fool ourselves! Otherwise, we will be hit hard again when we are so confident in our safety and enjoy too much individual freedom.

4) Even if the Obama withdraws troops from the Middle East and Afghanistan, it doesn't mean the terrorist war ends. It just says that the US cannot defeat them in brute forces! We just wait and fight them here!
