The inspiring story of how a small town in West Virginia, steeped in the rich tradition of college football, struggled to cope with a devastating loss and restore their community after one of the worst disasters in the history of American sports. On the evening of Saturday, November 14, 1970, a chartered jet carrying Marshall University's football team, coaches and fans, was on its way home from a hard-fought game in North Carolina. Less than a minute before its scheduled landing at Tri-State Airport, the plane crashed in the Appalachian Mountains, killing everyone aboard: 37 players, eight coaches and university staff, the flight crew, and 25 prominent Huntington citizens. They find hope and strength in the leadership of outsider Jack Lengyel, a young coach determined to rebuild Marshall's football program. Less than a year after the crash, on September 18, 1971, Marshall University was poised to stage one of the greatest comebacks in collegiate sports.

We Are Marshall is an inspiring film about a small in town in West Virginia, trying to cope with the death of the Marshall University football team, who unfortunately all died in a tragic plane crash. With 3 players left over, and a new coach, the team rallies together to petition the NCAA to allow the school to recruit freshmen to play. The movie is inspiring and shows that there is strength in numbers. It reminds you that there is beauty in the struggle and that no matter what happens in life, you still have the chance and ability to get back up on your feet and keep pushing forward. This movie is for sports fans, and those looking for an inspiring film to watch. I rate this movie 5/5 stars. - @CoolReadz of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Cliched? Oh, yes.
However, it educated the non-sports fan somewhat on American football formations, recruitment & more modest goal of having a competitive instead of winning team short term.

A very sad story and overall very well done but not my favourite football movie. I wouldn’t watch again.

A West Virginia town loses most of its main sources of revenue when most of the members and supporters of a varsity football team are lost in a tragic accident. Matthew McConaughey is a coach who is hired to help build a team with very little support from surviving townspeople. There’s no way you can watch this movie and not feel some kind of emotion.

I can only imagine that for most people it would be devistating to lose a child however a whole group many from the same community or surrounding area all the lives they touched outside of their families through out each week. It seems as though you wouldn't really know just how to proceed, what's too long, what's not long enough, many of the can's and can not's have changed without warning. They do come back admirally though although not without struggle. Good movie, good family-team inspirational story.
