In 1964, a hard-boiled major is ordered to defend Muc Wa, an unoccupied and seemingly unimportant Vietnamese military outpost left behind by the French. He, his idealistic young lieutenant, his mostly green soldiers, and their supporting force of Vietnamese volunteers are overwhelmed as they deal with ambushes, betrayals, and brutality.

After France lost Vietnam, the United States sent a few thousand military “advisers” to train the South Vietnamese to stop the North Vietnamese from taking over the country. Many of the “advised” were plain citizens with little knowledge or training in warfare and were often very poorly armed. This film portrays some of that little known part of America’s “adventures” in Vietnam.

I remember seeing this when I was a bit younger. Some will find it hard to believe but "incidents" like this happened.
A lot has changed since then but of course a lot hasen't
