A murderous android discovers itself in "All Systems Red", a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial intelligence. In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

From Library Staff

Murderbot is a cyborg security unit who hacked itself to freedom so it could binge its favorite TV shows. It has social anxiety and hates having to interact with its crew, but when someone seems to be sabotaging their mission, it is forced to step in.

If you're a snarky security bot who hacked itself some self-awareness, binge-watching is much more fun than murder. Just be careful the humans don't realize they no longer control you.

Murderbot was designed to kill and protect her clients, but all she really wants to do is be left alone to watch soap operas. The first in a 4-book series.

Martha Wells outdoes herself in the first in a series of novellas about SecUnit, a mass produced security cyborg that's not quite human--who has hacked their "governor module" and calls themself "Murderbot"--to investigate a massacre in which they were once forced to take part... Read More »

Well written, with a well-developed main character, this is the science fiction book I've been needing. The story doesn't get dark but still has lots of action, and provides an interesting perspective from a narrator who isn't human.

Murderbot is a great character and this little book was a joy to read. I'll definitely continue with the series.

Endearingly deadpan with just the right amounts of snark and heart, Murderbot is very compelling in their drive to do absolutely nothing (Okay, maybe protect their human clients). A fast, refreshing sci-fi read with a good balance of action and interior observation.

Great, well paced, quick read... don't know why it took previous reader so long... anyways, great continuation of the evolution of an un-governed 'robot'... cracks open a bit about what it might mean for people, other 'robots', society, etc... how will, believable story, nice world building, too. Keep them coming

An intriguing, but still light read. I will look up the next one in the series to see how it goes.

Murderbot really just wants to watch entertainment on its feeds...but the humans it serves are getting themselves into trouble and Murderbot has to intervene. A fun sci fi caper with some minor underlying thought-provoking content about robotics and free will...but, mostly, just good fun.

A novella filled with smart, wry SciFi, security bots are made by the lowest bidder, and this one manages to hack it's own governor and has a measure of freedom, which it spends watching various TV shows. But when a tiny research team is under threat, Murderbot proves itself (almost) human.
