"Beautifully drawn, brutally funny, brilliantly honest. Vera is such a good cartoonist I almost can't stand it." —Raina Telgemeier, author of Smile All Vera wants to do is fit in—but that's not easy for a Russian girl in the suburbs. Her friends live in fancy houses and their parents can afford to send them to the best summer camps. Vera's single mother can't afford that sort of luxury, but there's one summer camp in her price range—Russian summer camp. Vera is sure she's found the one place she can fit in, but camp is far from what she imagined. And nothing could prepare her for all the "cool girl" drama, endless Russian history lessons, and outhouses straight out of nightmares!

A misfit girl and her brother attend summer camp, where they struggle with primitive plumbing, snobby tentmates, and boys-versus-girls competitions.

Be Prepared is a very well done book. It is interesting to see what the girl, Vera thinks about sleep away camp. Some parts of the book are quite funny. The book is very well drawn, and is hard to put down. I really enjoyed this book, and thought it was very good.

Controversial graphic novel about a Russian-American girl and her brother attending a summer camp. Surrounded with many complications (different culture, unsettled life, unfriendly environment (co-campers)) the girl struggles with her socializing, awkward relationships, attempts of making friends and finding any possible comfort in her new adventure.

Funny, charmingly-drawn, realistic coming-of-age story about a Russian-American girl who feels like the odd one out in her neighborhood--too nerdy, too poor, too ethnic--so when she hears about a summer scout camp for Russian kids (just like her!), she begs to go. Things don't turn out the way she imagined, but it's an entertaining and extremely relatable ride to her personal growth through this experience. Strongly recommended for anyone from middle graders to adults!

This is a great graphic novel that has realistic views on what it is like when you go away to camp. I thought about my time at girl scout camp throughout the entire book and though mine wasn't as traumatic as Vera's, I certainly wrote about wanting to come home the first week I was there. The book is based on the author's own time at summer camp and it definitely feels like a real camp experience.

Oh my gosh -- from the letter home to mom on the first page -- "Dear Mom, could you pick me up as soon as you get this? Please! I'm desperate" to last page, you will laugh out loud and cringe and sigh as we all have had similar experiences at sometime in our life. The tale of the camp is so real that it brought back my own memories of the tents, bats, poison ivy, and eventually measles when I went away to Girl Scout Camp. Remember the song? Hello, mudder, hello, fadder. Here I am at Camp Granada......

Celebrated cartoonist Vera Brosgol, author of the excellent *Anya's Ghost*, wrote this charming and upbeat memoir of a summer spent at camp for Russian immigrant children living in upstate New York. Vera immigrated from Russian to the United States when she was five years old and struggled to build friendships with the mean girls in America. So she goes to Russian summer camp in upstate New York only to discover an entirely new breed of childhood horrors.

For some reason, I expected this graphic novel to have a supernatural twist, or a Big Mysterious Secret, and it did not. (Uh, spoiler?) That aside, it was a fun memoir. I never went to a sleepaway camp, but I definitely have gone camping enough to appreciate the anecdotes of the outdoors.

I'd recommend it to fans of Sunny Side Up and other memoir graphic novels for middle-grade readers -- possibly not to every single fan of Raina Telgemeier and Svetlana Chmakova, as it isn't quite as humorous, but it stands up well next to the other memoirs.
