In the North of Spain, Estrella grows up captivated by her father, a doctor with mystical powers, and by the enigma of his youth in the South, a near-mythical region whose secrets seem to haunt him more and more as time goes on. Though Erice's original vision also encompassed a long section set in the South itself, which was never made, it remains an experience of rare perfection and satisfaction.

I, as avarage cinephile, failed to see greatness of this movie. Cinematography is really piece of art, but not so much the story. If depression was the point of this film, than it has succeeded completely. Just not my cup of tea, should I say.

This is a beautifully filmed and told story. The extras reveal that the film is incomplete, as either the budget ran out, or that there was a disagreement between the producer and the director. Erice, the director, in an interview, tells his side of why the film was not finished, and how the version that we see is not the film that he wanted to make. He tells us how he would end the film, and it makes much more sense.

In interviews with the cinematographer, José Luis Alcaine, he reveals that he looked to painters for inspiration including Vermeer, Rembrandt and Caravaggio in how he lit his scenes. There is a magic in the lighting and how the characters interact in many scenes.

One wishes that Erice were able to make the film as he saw it, and not as how it was made. It would have been stupendous.

Victor Erice's "The Spirit of the Beehive" is considered one of the great (if not THE great) Spanish films and a part of the world cinema canon. A decade later he directed a lesser known, but no less impressive, film, "El Sur" (The South), based on a novella by Adelaida Gracia Morales, who was also married to Erice. Beautifully shot, and poignant, it's one of the more intimate, lyrical, and nostalgic films made about childhood, especially about the bond between father and daughter. Good to have this on DVD. Gracias Criterion Collection.

This is a wonderful film exploring the relationship of a father and his nine-year old daughter. The father, living in southern Spain (El Sur) during the horrible Spanish Civil War, moved to the north after the war where the film takes place. The little girl, totally adores her father, yet senses, especially as she grows older, that something from the "El Sur" period has had a totally negative effect on her father. Director Erice lost funding before he was able to film in the south where he was going to reveal what the girl (then mature) found on a trip to her father's relatives. The 2012 Sight and Sound poll of approximately 1000 film critics and directors, voted Erice's "The Spirit of the Beehive" as one of the best 125 films of all times. I may actually like "El Sur" more, especially with the ideas Erice had for the part he never got the money to film.
