Although this book starts kind of slow, once the main character leaves Minnesota it becomes very riveting. I enjoyed this story very much.

My first book by Ann Patchett--wow what a story and so beautifully written too. I listened to this in the audio book format. The reader was excellent and really brought the story alive for me. When Pharmacologist, Dr. Marina Singh, is sent off to the jungles of Brazil to check on the progress of her drug firm's research team, she is continually amazed by everything she encounters. From the native tribes, the intense Dr. Swenson and the jungle itself, it is a state of wonder. Also key to the plot is the mysterious death of the previous researcher sent to check on the team. The story unfolds in such a compelling way. I really loved this book.

It took a very long time for anything whatsoever to happen in this book, but eventually it caught my interest and I loved the ending. Good reader.

I enjoy Ann Patchett's writing very much, and this was no exception. As other reviewers have pointed out, the narration of the audiobook was also top-notch. The story keeps the reader guessing up until the very end, and the plot is so interesting that it does leave one in a "state of wonder." The redemption of the protagonist, would-be surgeon Marina Singh, is also very powerful.

A doctor working for a drug company is sent down to the Brazilian Rainforest to see why her coworker died when he had been sent down before her. Her previous clinical instructor in her internship year, was a tough lady doctor/professor and now a senior investigator in the same drug company. She had been sent down to Brazil years ago on an expense account to do research but has not sent any reports back up.

I've loved other Ann Patchett books but was only luke-warm about this one. It has some good ideas but is a bit far out.

While the writing is wonderful, the author tells the story in such a way that the reader has to think, too. Lovely.

Without revealing too much and running the risk of implying the book is one-dimensional, let's just say the book is about an extensive research project into a new, potentially earth-shattering drug.
