"From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookseller comes a gripping literary suspense novel set in the 1960s about a deeply troubled family and three women who will reveal its dark truths. In the autumn of 1960, Angie Glass is living an idyllic life in her Wisconsin hometown. At twenty-one, she's married to charming, handsome Paul, and has just given birth to a baby boy. But one phone call changes her life forever. When Paul's niece, Ruby, reports that her father, Henry, has committed suicide, and that her mother, Silja, is missing, Angie and Paul drop everything and fly to the small upstate town of Stonekill, New York to be by Ruby's side. Angie thinks they're coming to the rescue of Paul's grief-stricken young niece, but Ruby is a composed and enigmatic seventeen-year-old who resists Angie's attempts to nurture her. As Angie learns more about the complicated Glass family, staying in Henry and Silja's eerie and ultra-modern house on the edge of the woods, she begins to question the very fabric of her own marriage. Through Silja's flashbacks, Angie's discovery of astonishing truths, and Ruby's strategic dissection of her parents' state of affairs, a story of love, secrets, and ultimate betrayal is revealed"-- Provided by publisher.

The characters were all creepy. I kept waiting for something to happen, it never did.

No, no, no. Swanson is a pedantic and formulaic author and this book is not worth your time ... unless you’re stranded in a hospital waiting room (as I was) with nothing else to read.

I listened to this book and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to stick with it but I'm glad I did. There is a slow build up to Henry's death and Celia's disappearance as secrets and the background history of this family is slowly revealed. As it got closer to the end and what really happened, I wanted to sit in my car even though I had reached my destination so I could keep listening. I think at one point I gasped and put my hand over my mouth. I'm sure the drivers next to me wondered what was going on. This book is well worth the time to stick with it. I enjoyed the audiobook as it switched between three different POV's and different people narrated the characters.

I loved, loved this book. Beautiful, rich, lyrical prose. A mystery, a coming-of-age book. Wonderful story, interesting characters. The end fell just a touch short, but so enjoyed this, I immersed myself in it.

This is one of those books that starts well, gets better and better....and sadly fails towards the end resoundingly. I think the author did a really good construction of the different characters, adding the right amount of details to enrich the story but at the same time keep a good pace. The narrative was captivating me more and more as I was making progress, and I couldn't put the book down. I was thrilled and had great expectations, but then the end just did not work for me at all. It was plain, it was too rushed and it was too predictable. Whilst the emotions of the characters had been carefully displayed in detail throughout the book, suddenly they were shut down to the point of being almost non existent. This abrupt change left me with a sense of total disappointment after finishing the book. I was also hoping for a twist in the plot. In my opinion, there were enough options to end the story in a different way, and it would have worked much better. It is a shame that all the effort put in crafting a good novel ended up with such a bad taste in my mouth.

Such a page turner and a quick read! If I had the time, I could have read this book completely in one session. I really enjoyed the way that Cynthia Swanson weaved the characters' stories together into one story. It was also fun to read a book by a local author and I look forward to reading her other book.

Turn off your phone. Hide away. Once you start this intensifying and deeply atmospheric novel about a post-war family's troubles and secrets, told from the perspectives of three women, you will not be able to put it down. Literary suspense gold.
