A celebrity wedding reception on a remote island during a storm so nobody can get to or leave the island, a power outage, a load of wedding guests with some mysterious pasts... There's almost no better mixture for a murder!
I couldn't put this book down. I believe it took me a whopping two days to read. It is full of interesting characters, some more likeable than others, with all sorts of realistic flaws. Each chapter is written from a different character's point of view. I find that to be a tough mechanic to pull off, but Foley nails it. The timing with the "earlier/later" sections (another mechanic I find tricky) is pretty much perfect. The references to the mysterious events of the stag party add an interesting angle to the story. I felt there were maybe a few coincidences too many at the end, but I was still satisfied (and somewhat surprised) with the answer to whodunnit.
Lucy Foley's modern day whodunit is an impressive piece of prose that kept me guessing all the way till the end. It's a must read. I liked reading the story through the 1st person narrative of the different characters and how the past and the present came together. Note though, that the Guest List is a slow burn. The payoff doesn't come until near the end of the book. However, IMO, the payoff is worth it because of the painstaking way Ms. Foley has built the backstory of the main characters. Also, you are not going to care for several of the main characters. I believe that is by design,
Ms. Foley has written a really crafty and c;lever novel. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I very happily give it 5 stars.
I am on the fence about this one. I want to so badly love it because the preface is good. Kinda creepy location with a spooky history, characters that run from complete jerks to sweet and wounded. It has a great twist at the end that I did not see coming unfortunately, it does take awhile to get there. I would mark this as an ok read; definitely has some good moments and definitely has some ho- hum skip this section moments.
The end of the book made it worth reading. Lots of twists. I’m not a fan of flipping ahead and then goIng back in the plot. Just keep on the plot and move ahead. Can’t decide if I liked it.
A real page turner. Could not put it down!
I loved the writing style with each chapter being from a different character point of view. That may be my favorite style of fiction writing. It was a little too all connected to be believable, but it was a page-turner, none-the-less. I was surprised by the ending, which really made the whole book enjoyable. I could have done without so much vulgar language, but I suppose it could be argued that it fit the characters. For those that like mysteries and revenge stories, this one is good.
Wow! What a wedding!
This mystery is in the Agatha Christie stye….lots of potential suspects and everyone has a secret. I found it entertaining even though somewhat clichéd and with too many coincidences to be believable. If you read and liked The Hunting Party, you'll probably like this one as it is very similar.
It was really slow and hard to kind of get into but my god the ending!
I found it slow because there are 7 different narrators and each chapter gives you a slightly different point of view and teases small pieces of information, which was very well done but like I said did make it hard to get into since you aren't invested in the characters at the start and they don't give enough to really hook you in.
The author did an amazing job of keeping how everything connects to herself until the very end.
Whoever you think gets killed and who the killer is ill just tell you you're wrong. I had multiple guesses every chapter and this combination never crossed my mind. It was truly a work of art.
Page turner begins with a waitress at a high-end wedding screaming about "so much blood," our job is to piece together whose blood has been spilled, and by whom. Good, fast read is completely plot-driven, teeming with characters I suspect we're not intended to like very much, and to that end the author is successful. The problem is these aren't characters we care very much about, least of all the bride and groom.
