Daniel James Brown, author of The Boys in the Boat, has written an engrossing and often heartbreaking book about 4 Japanese American heroes of World War II, 3 members of the famed 442nd and one who peacefully practiced civil disobediance. In the course of telling their stories, Brown recounts the racism encountered by JAs before, during, and after the war, including the incarceration of the families of 2 of his subjects, the other families escaping this fate only because they didn't live in the designated area of the West Coast. Although I'm fairly well-versed in JA history, this book contains many nuggets of history that I didn't know. The JA WWII story is one that deserves to be better known, and I hope that a popular author like Brown can make this happen.
