This sequel to Harriet the Spy (more of a companion novel really) focuses largely on Harriet's friend, Beth Ellen, and is severely underrated. Childhood friendships, a central mystery, serious thoughts on religion, neglectful parents/clueless adults, a languid summer in the Hamptons in the 1960s, and lovely ink drawings done by the author. The appeal may not be as wide as it is for Harriet the Spy, but for those of us interested in any of the above, it hits just right. One of my all-time favorites.
