The classic racing season at Santa Anita begins on the day after Christmas. December 26th 1963 was a cool clear bright sunny day in Arcadia, and I had my dream job, working in the backstretch at Santa Anita. I ate at the track kitchen daily, and slept in a tack room for the entire season, right next door to a stall whose equine tenant loved to kick the wooden wall at 3am. It was rough and ready and during that time working at Santa Anita, I came to meet and talk to and work with just about every character in LUCK, so to me the ill-fated single season wasn't really fiction - it was very real. And really quite haunting and evocative. Truly the best inside look at west coast horse racing ever put to film. And yes, the dialogue is spoken in the argot of the racetrack, and so for some will be practically spoken in a foreign language. To me the series is a work of art that probably will not be surpassed, and I still have never hit a P-6, but have cashed some very sweet superfectas.
