Hard to warm up to, partly for the air of guilt that hangs over it from the very first, but mostly because this tale doesn't fulfill our preconceptions about the state of gay liberation. Perhaps it's best appreciated as a gay artist's bitter indictment of conformist German society: Here, it says, is what comes of your pressure to 'Komm' -- come on, join the group, follow the rules. The film is not afraid to take the time to build a detailed case of divided loyalties. Marc's job -- as policeman (his social self), to enforce society's norms -- at odds with his heart.
