“I get all the dessert I want in Sunday school.”
-Charlie, the narrator’s brother
This declaration to the notorious Herdman clan turned that year’s Christmas pageant on it’s head making it the most memorable one to all concerned. The Herdman’s are a family of six kids - Imogene, Gladys, Ollie, Claude, Ralph, and Leroy - with a deserved reputation for being a handful singularly and as a group or maybe they were just masterful manipulators of adults which didn’t go down well either.
At the Christmas pageant practice, their natural curiosity is roused as they heard the Christmas story for the first time. Their honest initial reaction was shock about many elements of the Christmas story that are accepted by the rest of us without a second thought. Their direct childlike questions gave you something to think about as a reminder of what was the motivator for people’s actions in this Bible story. Listen in to discover the impact the Herdman’s had on making this the best Christmas pageant ever by tapping their child’s natural curiosity, observational skills, and wisdom.
The reader, C. J. Critt, helps keep this story light yet retains the point of the narrative which is a revisiting of the oft repeated story of Jesus birth. She taps her numerable vocal skills - a matter of fact delivery interleaving with a humorous tone and great pacing with tonal highs/lows. C. J. Critt well differentiates between characters which is critical to the performance of an audio book.
What a powerful message cleverly framed in a girl’s memory of when the well earned reputation of a notorious family of kids participated in the local Christmas pageant! This story is a great way to refresh your Christmas spirit through children’s eyes. It points out how people get caught up in the secular side of this holiday relegating the main serious points of it to the deep background of their minds. This remembrance takes the listener back to when they were involved in these types of learning situations and is a reminder of personalities they grew up with – the tattle tale, the bully, the mischief makers, the sideline observer, etc. It’s a Christmas story kids and adults alike can enjoy – so do it!“I get all the dessert I want in Sunday school.”

“What we love to do, we find time to do.”
- John L. Spaulding
Think you don’t have the time to take up this habit forming pursuit? The author then launches on strategies on where to eek out a few moments to knit – she’s spot on. Through the course of this book, she examines whether knitting is an art or craft? That this handwork has artistic value is in it’s application. Knitting is sculpture using one long piece of string – an interesting observation.
This is a collection of wise amusing quips and quotes fleshed out with the author’s own take on the point made. With 34,000 stitches in a pair of socks, she cuts every knitter a break with this parting thought - “Some socks are fraternal not identical twins.” Thank you as most of my projects are OOAK (One Of A Kind) so I will hold my head up (not cringe) when asked to make someone another piece just like this one replying that I’ll see what I can do. This book is not to be missed by the crafter or family of same – a good self deprecating laugh throughout.
The author and reader, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, brings good energy and humor to a subject that could have limited reach but in her voice can be appreciated by all - knitters and the uninitiated alike. There is laughter in her speaking voice and she adds spirited fun to my guilty pleasure.
This is a hysterical listen for anyone who does handwork of any kind, chortles and chuckles abound. The situations this author shares are very identifiable. It’s as if she were peeking out from my knitting basket with the many insights that hit so close to home – packing knitting as you would your clothing, shipping purchased skeins or finished work to yourself when you’re out of town, bringing carry on projects for plane or car trips, how knitting can improve my mood in trying circumstances, etc.
From listening to this book, I will no longer feel self conscious when I consider what handwork to pack, how long the projects will take, will they last as long as I will be away from home, do I have all the tools I will need, and on and on. Throughout this book, I find myself nodding my head in affirmation…my husband recognizes me in the author’s anecdotes. One last thing, it doubles your pleasure listening to this book while you’re knitting…hmmmm.“What we love to do, we find time to do.”

Can a spidey sense expire? Miles Morales is trying to work out why his Spidey sense seems to be fading while his run ins with high school instructors intensify. Is one of his teachers the trigger for his spidey sense? Is there a correlation to the nauseating buzzing bouts or is it just coincidence? He has typical teenage insecurities about girls, friends, grades, his changing body, and is mischievous to the point of being a little reckless. He’s a bit of a show off like his counter part Peter Parker with the same origin story stemming from an unfortunate encounter with a biting spider…apparently more than one got loose. Ganke, his friend and side kick, is in on Miles’ secret offering moral support as well as unwittingly giving out clues via offhand comments which lead our hero to the ultimate climax in this superhero saga.
The reader, Guy Lockhard, captures the energy, youth and gritty adventure of the Spiderman saga in his reading of this tale. He ably handles voices for the men, women, and accents for this tale set in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to the text, he has good energy adding a sense of danger and urgency in the fight scenes.
This is a fun, refreshing diversion for the ear. It’s lighthearted and amusing while delving deeper into darker scifi regions. Miles Morales’ Spiderman series has a similar origin story to the original but provides fresh adventures and additional updated skills. The author crafts great descriptive text which takes the listener with Miles onto the basketball court, his family home, the streets of NY with Ganke, in class at his private high school where he’s a scholarship student, etc. In addition to fighting crime, the Miles Morales Spiderman fights racism and social injustice which is an appropriate update to this superhero tale. Can a spidey sense expire? “(On Queer Eye) I help people evaluate how they respond to their internal and external struggles.”
-Karamo Brown, Queer Eye
This is part of what he brings to Netflix Queer Eye series and how he garnered the nickname Kar-Oprah. His strength is culture - not art or classical music - but current culture and how to use it to the hero’s (featured person) advantage. Karamo counsels the hero to have him/her reflect on their life and then act to make positive changes.
His own life experiences give him a wealth of knowledge to draw from in his counseling. Karamo relates how when he was a young man, he felt his own pain justified his actions, like being abusive to partners and then with maturity learning from these mistakes. Having addictions and attempting suicide are among the personal problems he discusses openly. “What was my trigger?”, he asks. Life’s pressures which he now takes one day at a time.
In this book, he also shares that his best friend was the church despite being a gay man. He espouses faith - love - no judgment citing Romans Ch. 1 and I John 4:7…”Beloved let us love one another…” He supports religion as a gay man and doesn’t run from conflict on this topic. Many times in this section, he points out that you can’t divorce scripture from context which he feels are how misconceptions are generated. His story is very relatable as he shares feeling different from most people, as an outsider. Give this a listen and see what you think.
The reader and author, Karamo Brown, makes this story even more compelling and personal because it is delivered in his own voice. His rich voice is welcoming, drawing you into his narrative.
This autobiography is fast paced, engaging, and interesting throughout. Karamo’s sharing his struggles with sexuality - addiction - anger management and subsequent embracing of healing were heart warming.“(On Queer Eye) I help people evaluate how they respond to their internal and external struggles.”

“I tried my hand at a few things and if I was any good at it, that meant it had to be either totally useless or totally against the law…”
-Michael, The Lock Artist
With that comment, the author draws us into this narrative and the main character – Michael – shares his career criminal recollections wearing an orange jumpsuit from a prison cell. He takes you on various jobs with memorable believable fellow criminals and reveals over time the circumstances that lead to how he arrived in his current situation. He was orphaned as a child through a car wreck where his parents were killed. As a result of the accident’s trauma, he wound up with selective mutism then went to live with his bachelor Uncle who didn’t know what to do with a kid. Michael has a natural propensity for understanding how locks work but also has a safe cracking teacher – The Ghost – who taught him the skills of a box man/lock artist. What job finally goes wrong that leads him to prison? How does he get his voice back? Check out this audio book to find out…
The reader, MacLeod Andrews, has great pacing and tonal variety in the telling of this tale. His voice sounds the right age and attitude for the main character – just shy of 18 years old and on his own.
This book caught me from the opening lines and kept my attention riveted throughout until the end. The author’s prose combined with the reader’s tone are a great match. The characters are distinct and memorable. This is a story about family - the struggle between fathers and grown sons on both sides of the law. There are questions to be answered and seeds of doubt to be planted. The author’s skilled use of foreshadowing develops a smoldering sense of foreboding right from the get-go. He cleverly ties in references to the King/Kennedy’s assassinations with the KKK – a new angle to the conspiracy theories.
A fitting and amusing side light are the pistol packing geriatric friends of his father as well as Southern dowagers who supply subtle possibly essential gossip which furthers the story line. Mental illness and multiple personalities are used as a plot device and obstacle for the main character who is painstakingly trying to sift facts from mentally disturbed townsfolk. Dread and tension build as the author weaves story lines together using a chance encounter between characters heretofore unknown to each other. This author expertly sets up the story line for the next book in the series.
The reader, David Ledoux, well uses his vocal talents to tease listeners deeper into the story line the author ably sets out and keeps us there throughout this book.
It’s a real treat to follow this series through the years in the characters lives reveling in the author’s skill in crafting the events laid out in this story. Treat yourself to a re-listening of this series, too. It’s delicious to return to the series because you anticipate what’s coming for the characters and can truly fully appreciate the nuggets of foreshadowing/clues the author casually drops like breadcrumbs for all of us to follow to the unexpected end. If you’re a germophobe, go no further but if you’re the curious type – forge ahead! This is fun fact filled in the extreme body biology nerd version. The author has unique turns of phrase like when he refers to the body as “a warm wobble of flesh”. He also blows your mind relating that DNA will be recoverable 1000 years from now – what!?! This book is chock a block with the backstory on so many scientific discoveries. He shares how roadblocks to discoveries were overcome by seemingly random chance substitutions and twists of fate or how discoveries weren’t monetized because the scientist involved wasn’t interested in pursuing further research.
Ever wonder why babies sleep all the time? Why is it that only humans have a chin? Is there really suicide by lifestyle? How do the muscles in your eyeball make your iris expand or contract? There is so much yet to be discovered in this the vast unexplored region known as the body. Get your hands on this book and do some exploring!
The reader and author, Bill Bryson, is just the right person to share this book. His vocal presentation of this material is calm yet intriguing and authoritative adding to the listeners pleasure, drawing you in to hear every word.
This book has a bit of the “ewww” factor for the non-scientist but is fascinating none the less. The deeper I got into this book the more blown away I was at the information presented. Are the facts too clear but not clear enough? This thought runs through the mind of Sidney Chambers, Vicar of Grantchester, as he softly...softly interviews parishioners, villagers, the deceased man’s secretary and his widow among other women in his life in the first death of this tale. The body count doesn’t end there with one character commenting, “Be careful if you have Canon chambers over...it could be fatal.” But that is what makes this series so enjoyable...what will happen next and to whom? As we can trust, the truth will out.
The reader, Peter Wickham, aptly handles voicing the old and young, men and women in this cozy British mystery. His pacing and tone along with the author’s words take the listener to the English countryside near Grantchester with it’s village gossip and green rolling hills.
The cozy mystery genre is such a relaxing comfortable yet intriguing listen. Your who-dun-it assertion is withheld in this murder mystery. Using a Vicar as detective is an interesting approach to baring the facts. Giving ear to this book is a pleasant way to spend an evening. Are the facts too clear but not clear enough? “You have collected so much wonderful stuff in your life, stuff that your family and friends can’t evaluate or take care of.” (referring to the process of wrapping up your estate)
- Margareta Magnusson
From these wise words and the numerous death cleanings she has done, Margareta Magnusson shares her experiences and insights into personal downsizing, wrapping up estates, and discreet disposal of unexpected things you find in the family closets. She recommends that you “…spend one last time with your objects and dispose of them. I think about what an object meant to me.”
But where to begin? She suggests starting with large things and work your way down or start with clothes that may have less emotional attachment to them. For instance, arrange a low maintenance wardrobe for yourself – out go the items that no longer fit, need repair, that you haves vast multiples of, etc. Make notes if you have a special dispensation for an item. With your pets, it’s important that you realize that they can outlive you. Consider your responsibility to them. Make arrangements for them after you die. Don’t wait too long to start the job of downsizing. Get to it while you still have the strength and stamina to do it.
“Living smaller is a relief.”
-Margareta Magnusson
The reader, Juliet Stevenson, has a crisp clean yet engaging delivery very appropriate for the topic at hand. Her reading of this book keeps the listener engaged throughout giving us all much to consider for our futures.
Ultimately, taking care of this cleaning is a gift to your loved ones. This book is filled with surprising and wise insights with a light humorous touch. We are in the process of spending one last time with objects by labeling family photos in frames and working up a personal photo album/scrapbook for each of our children. Family movies transferred from 8mm format to DVD make thoughtful gifts for older family members that are very convenient to enjoy and share with the next generation.“You have collected so much wonderful stuff in your life, stuff that your family and friends can’t evaluate or take care of.” (referring to the process of wrapping up your estate)

He was called back to his boyhood hometown, Bienville, MS, as his father nears death and to help his mother through this trying time. Just as Marshall is settling in to the short term running his father’s newspaper, The Watchman, his mentor Buck McKibben, his Boy Scout leader and archaeologist becomes a sudden homicide victim. He had the bad fortune of making his finds in a future construction site for a paper mill with financial motivation by locals to silence him.
Throughout this story there are whirling plot twists, reconciliations, unexpected alliances, and renewed childhood friendships that may lead to romance. In other words, juicy listening from beginning to end.

That’s where we start this tale of a future human man’s inner conflict. Androids don’t know they are androids but conversely doubt whether the bounty hunters really exist or would that be hope they don’t? They have a curiosity about natural creatures but with an unexpected evil bent fueling the testing of that curiosity.
When this story takes place, every regular non-android should have emigrated already to an off world colony. Deckard works for the San Francisco Police Department and keeps an electric black face Suffolk ewe on the roof of his apartment complex. Having an electronic animal is a status symbol, a live one even more so which motivates Deckard to continue his search for andy’s to retire, then claim the bounty money to buy a live animal.
Organic androids…humanoid robots…that’s what Philip K. Dick was predicting in his 1968 sci fi novel. Is that where we are now? Should we consider Rick Deckard’s end realization -
“The electric things have their lives too.”
-Rick Deckard
The reader, Scott Brick, aptly captures the world weary noir mood for place and characters in this cyber punk sci fi tale. His reading also conveys hope where there is little to be found. He has done very well.
Even though the book and original movie are dissimilar on many levels, the visuals from the movie flashed in my minds eye as I followed Rick Deckard as he retired andy’s for bounty money and status among his cohorts. This book is very different than the movie but very good in it’s own right. It invites the reader/listener to reflect on their own comfort with and attitudes toward technology.“Emigrate or degenerate! The choice is yours!”

“My sense of humor is wet and loud and risqué like topless day at the water park.”
-Mindy Kaling
This book is inspiring in that she shares her ambitions and insecurities regarding career, romance and having a non-traditional body type that all young women feel. She shares her thoughts on the glamour puss, her own beauty tips, and that “celebrity secrets are more valuable than diamonds” inferring that Carson Daly has a secret twin in order for him to keep up his grueling schedule. Mindy Kaling is very open about her competitive nature wondering aloud if this is what keeps her going. This book is delivered in a fast paced, witty yet conversational style that will keep you riveted for that reason along with her entertaining writing style and its’ unexpected juxtaposition of words and ideas. She ends her book with this thought…
“I get worried that telling girls how difficult it is to be confident implies a tacit expectation that girls won’t be able to do it.” But we know that’s just not true…she thought she could so she did.
The reader and author, Mindy Kaling with comments from Greg Daniels and B. J. Novak, makes this telling of her life and thoughts even more personal by reading this to us, her audience. She is the lively, lighthearted chatty friend you enjoy hearing from.
If you’re looking for an upbeat fun and funny sharing of a young woman’s experiences trying to establish a career in the entertainment business (or any other profession), this is the book for you. She finds the humor in her life from childhood to her young adulthood and takes the listener along on this journey. I chortled, snickered, and had a very good time throughout. Climb on aboard and enjoy the ride.“My sense of humor is wet and loud and risqué like topless day at the water park.”
